Shelby
From the early days of Spears Strong to now, my husband Jonathan has been my partner, my trainer, my coach, my mentor …
Less than a decade ago none of these statements about myself (including referring to myself in the third person) were true. Through the painful personal growth that comes with co-owning a small business, transitioning from journalist to health coach and working on my own health & fitness habits I can now assure all of the following about me are true:
Shelby enjoys working out.
Shelby plays chess.
Shelby breathes through her nose.
Shelby is a Toastmaster, participating weekly in a public speaking club.
Shelby jumps off cliffs, runs up mountains and camps in the woods.
Shelby leads and lifts up others.
Shelby takes cold showers and sticks her extremities in ice baths.
Shelby practices deep breathing, active stretching and intentional movement daily.
Shelby eats well and hydrates properly.
Shelby prioritizes sleep and recovers from stress.
Shelby's mind is open and focused for growth.
Shelby has not had a panic attack in over five years. Little tip: talking to yourself in the third person is a great way to defeat negative self talk and to bolster your courage and breathing through your nose reduces anxiety!
Shelby is the strongest she has ever been, and she’s in her 40s.
Shelby’s mobility and ability to do physical activities is the best it’s ever been, and she’s in her 40s.
Gold star me, but I could add caveats to all those statements. No one is perfect and I’m certainly still a work in progress. For example: Shelby eats well but too often she finds herself eating large quantities of pasta or chocolate to the point of discomfort, because, well … yum. Or Shelby’s mind is open for growth but she often gets frustrated when she’s not good at something or she is being called out on a failure.
Shelby is also a recovering procrastinator - still fighting to unlearn this maladaptive learned behavior - and she has a hard time not giving up when things like runs, workouts - or life - get tough. That’s why I workout at Spears Strong and follow the same systemic approach as our clients. One small step at a time, working every day to gain a little momentum and get a little better.
As a Health Coach I help clients battle their own bad habits and find their Personal Core Values to set goals that matter to them and how they want to live their lives. I guide and support clients on eating well, sleeping enough and opening their minds to change. I work collaboratively at Spears Strong with trainers to set our clients up for success. And while I am a certified health coach, group fitness instructor, co-business owner and a former professional journalist, it’s my personal experience with Spears Strong training where I have found the most personal growth and improvement, physically, mentally and emotionally.
I want the same for you, but specific to your life, not mine. Let’s chat!
